Is it just me, or has the amigurumi world changed so much lately?
For years, acrylic was the “old reliable” for so many of us. It was accessible, sturdy, and one of the best ways to get those super-sharp details in a character. But even as life gets a bit more expensive, I’m seeing a massive shift toward premium, softer fibers.
I’ll be the first to admit: I absolutely love using soft, fluffy yarn. There’s nothing like finishing a project and having it feel like a total cloud! But it’s been interesting to think about the trade-offs we make between that “cuddle factor” and the “stitch definition.”
Celebrating the “New Wave” and the “OG” Roots
It’s so inspiring to see how many new creators are jumping into crochet through the “chenille revolution.” For a lot of the newer wave of YouTubers and TikTokers, chenille is amigurumi, and I love the energy they bring to the craft!
It’s also fun to look back and remember that acrylic and cotton were where the journey started for so many of the original tutorials online. Those fibers were the foundation that taught us the “detailed” side of crochet. Whether you’re a fan of the classic look or the new plushy style, it’s just amazing to see how much our community has grown and evolved.
When Hobbies Become Self-Care
I think our priorities are shifting because the way we look at our hobbies is shifting. Fiber arts have a long history of being practical—making things because they were needed.
But today, for most of us, crochet is our “happy place.” If we’re doing this for joy and relaxation, the comfort of the yarn is a huge part of the experience! I think many makers are realizing that the “feel” of the yarn matters just as much as the finished piece. If it feels like a hug while you’re making it, it’s worth that extra investment.
Softening the Edges of Reality
I sometimes wonder if we’re subconsciously choosing these “soft” yarns because the world can feel a bit “sharp” lately. When life gets stressful, there is something so grounding about working with a fiber that feels gentle. We’re choosing that immediate comfort for our hands and our hearts—even if it means the stitches are a little more hidden.
Exhibit A: The Power of Detail

Exhibit B: The Sensory Dream

So, where do you land?
There is truly no “right” way to crochet. That’s the beauty of it! Whether you’re Team Chenille or Team Acrylic, we’re all just here to create something awesome.
I’d love to hear your thoughts! Do you find yourself reaching for chenille more often these days, or do you still love your acrylic yarns? Let’s chat (kindly!) in the comments! ?
