Materials:

  1. Orange, light orange, green, light green, black yarn.
  2. Scissors
  3. Darning needle
  4. Size H crochet hook
  5. Button, string, ribbon or magnets to secure the lid onto the bag
  6. White paint pen to make the eyes sparkle (optional)

Base of the bag:

  1. With orange and light orange. You are going to crochet this double stranded. 6sc in magic circle. (6)
  2. 2sc in each st. (12)
  3. (1sc in st. 2sc in st.) x 6. (18)
  4. (1sc in next 3st. 2sc in st.) x 6. (24)
  5. (1sc in next 4st. 2sc in st.) x 6. (30)
  6. (1sc in next 5st. 2sc in st.) x 6. (36)
  7. (1sc in next 6st. 2sc in st.) x 6. (42)
  8. (1sc in next 7st. 2sc in st.) x 6. (48)
  9. (1sc in next 8st. 2sc in st.) x 6. (54)
  10. (1sc in next 9st. 2sc in st.) x 6. (60)
  11. (1sc in next 10st. 2sc in st.) x 6. (66)
  12. (1sc in next 11st. 2sc in st.) x 6. (72)
  13. (1sc in next 12st. 2sc in st.) x 6. (78)
  14. (1sc in next 13st. 2sc in st.) x 6. (84)

Walls of bag:

  1. With the same colors you have been using for the base. Hdc in each st. For 24 rows.
  2. Now we go on to create the lid.

Lid:

  1. With green and light green colors. Dc in the next 23st. (23)
  2. Dc in each st. For 5 rows. (23)
  3. 2dctog x 2. Dc in the next 15st. 2dctog x 2. (19)
  4. 2dctog x 2. Dc in the next 11st. 2dctog x 2. (15)
  5. FO.

Straps for the sides of the bag (Make 2. One for each side.)

  1. With orange and light orange colors. Chain 2.
  2. 1sc in each chain starting in the second one from the hook. (1)
  3. 1sc in each st. For 20 rows. (1)
  4. FO.
  5. So at this point you can see that the opening of the bag is larger than the lid. You need to center the lid with the opening. The extra pieces of the body of the bag will need to be folded in order for it to fit behind the lid. As you can see in the picture I have created 3 folds.
  6. The stitches created in the body of the bag has large enough holes for the straps you just created to fit through. String one strap on each side in order to secure the folds. The image provided below is what the bag should look like when you are done. I have also included another image as an example of how you should string the straps through.
  7. After stringing through, you should sew the ends of the strap together.

Closure for the lid:

  1. For this part you can either have ribbon or yarn to close the bag.
  2. I used a magnet. It is best to use a really strong magnet so that you can actually close the lid. The layers of yarn are going to be really thick so you need to use a strong magnet. A neodymium magnet is recommended. You can get these at hardware stores, craft stores, Etsy and Ebay.
  3. I secured the magnet onto the bag using hot glue. Then covered it with a thin layer of felt. I didn’t have orange and green on hand but it is best to match the color of the bag so that you don’t see the magnet as much when you open the bag.

Bag Straps (Make 2):

  1. With orange and light orange color. Chain 4.
  2. 1sc in each chain starting in the second chain from the hook. (3)
  3. Chain 1. Turn. Hdc in each st.
  4. Repeat step 3 until it is long enough to fit your child. I had to put it on my kids to make sure the straps were not long enough. Mine are about 16 inches each strap.
  5. To sew this onto the bag, I sewed the top part of the strap about 2 inches away from the edges of the lid so they are closer to the middle of the bag.
  6. The bottom part of the straps should be close to the edges of the bag. Approximately 1.5 inches away from where you sewed the top parts.

Faces on bag:

  1. You can be really creative with the faces. I made 3 different ones for my kids.
  2. All have triangles for eyes.
  3. For the triangles, use black yarn and chain 9.
  4. 1sc in each chain starting in the second chain from the hook. (8)
  5. Chain 1. Turn. Sc2tog. 1sc in the next 4st. Sc2tog. (6)
  6. Chain 1. Turn. Sc2tog. 1sc in the next 2st. SC2tog. (4)
  7. Chain 1. Turn. Sc2tog x 2.
  8. FO.
  9. Make another one and sew the eyes onto the bag. Make sure that they are sewn below the lid do you can see them when you close the bag.
  10. I used a white paint pen to make the eyes sparkle.
  11. For the mouth you can embroider a thin smile. Or you can create a zigzag pattern like I did for one of the bags.

Another example of how the sides of the bag should be folded. I thought this image might be clearer to see how the sides should be folded. It also shows how the straps should be going through the sides.
