Bringing Luma Back to Life: The 2026 Super Mario Galaxy Remaster

It has been 15 years since I first shared my Luma crochet pattern with you all. Since then, so much has changed—including my filming setup, my crochet techniques, and even the Super Mario world itself! After seeing the new Mario movie with my family, I felt that spark of inspiration to go back to my roots and give one of my favorite characters the “HD treatment” it deserves.

What’s New in the Remaster?

If you followed the 2010 tutorial, you’ll remember the grainy video and tricky-to-follow steps. For the 2026 Remaster, I’ve completely overhauled everything:

  • Crystal Clear HD Video: No more squinting!
  • Improved Audio: Clear instructions on where you place the arms, legs and eyes.
  • Refined Pattern: I’ve tweaked the pattern to make it more clear and easy to understand.

You can jump right into the project below. Whether you’re making this for your own Nintendo collection or as a handmade Christmas gift, this Luma is a quick and satisfying project for all skill levels.

Materials Needed:

To get that classic Super Mario Galaxy look, here is what I used:

  1. 3.5mm hook
  2. Black oval safety eyes. If you search on Amazon or Etsy you will find them.
  3. Medium weight 4 yellow yarn. You can also use any color you want because the Lumas in Super Mario Galaxy are different colors.
  4. Scissors
  5. Stuffing
  6. Darning needle

What’s Next?

This is just the beginning of my “Remaster Series.” I’m currently organizing all my classic gaming characters into one Ultimate Sackboy Master Playlist so you can find every hero in one place.

Which character should I make next? Let me know in the comments here or over on YouTube!

Happy crocheting!!!
