Toy Safety

It’s that time of year again. I have been searching on Amazon for Christmas gifts. I usually look pretty early and place items in my Amazon wish list for future reference. This year, we decided to get Zoey a play kitchen. At first it didn’t really matter what brand I chose. Initially I wanted to get the KidKraft Uptown Espresso Kitchen. I didn’t get it right away because, like with most things I buy, I compare with other products to see if it is the best/affordable item I can get. My husband suggested to look to see if this brand of toy had any recalls. KidKraft didn’t seem to have any recalls but I wanted to look at other play kitchens. Melissa and Doug had a play kitchen I liked. I even added it to my cart. I almost bought it too.

I then came across an article stating that Melissa and Doug had to recall three of their wooden toys due to high barium content in their paints: Slice and Bake Cookie Set, Shape Sorting Cube, and Pound-a-Peg. You can read the article here: Melissa and Doug Recall. Zoey had received the Slice and Bake Cookie Set for Christmas last year. She was obsessed with them. I freaked out when I read about the recall that was issued back in 2009. It was recalled in Canada, but it did not mention if the toys distributed here in the US were affected. You know what, it is better to be on the safe side when it comes to our children. I will not be buying any more Melissa and Doug toys. This made me question the toys we already have.

Currently, I have been more careful when buying toys for our kids. I finally decided on the KidKraft play kitchen. I hope this was the right choice. There are lists online on what is deemed safe for kids to play with: The Ultimate Guide to the Best Non-Toxic Toys, Safe Toy Guide, Non-Toxic Baby Toys. It is definitely extra work to do more research but it is worth it. Maybe I’m being too careful but I’m a worrier. Getting safer toys for her makes me worry less and gives me peace of mind.

Let me know what you guys thing about this in the comments below. For those of you who have kids, what are your favorite safe toy brand.
