Review: Split

[There will be SPOILERS]

At first I didn’t want to watch this movie but then my husband and I read that it was connected with Unbreakable. I hadn’t seen Unbreakable so we definitely had to see that first. My first impression of the whole movie was optimistic. I thought that this movie was going to be great. It was marketed as a horror film but it’s not scary at all. Split was written, produced and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. The thing about Shyamalan is that the settings of his films are always in Pennsylvania which I love. However, he’s not always consistent with his films. There are some that are my favorites and there are those that are clearly misses. I thought this was somewhat of a miss.

Split is about three girls who are kidnapped by a patient with dissociative identity disorder. His name is Kevin. He has 23 alters and apparently another one is surfacing. Kevin’s alters call him the beast. No one knows if the beast exists of if Kevin’s alters are making him up to scare the girls.

First of all, the acting was phenomenal by the main characters, especially McAvoy. Any Taylor-Joy was pretty good too. The actress who played the psychologist was terrible. Her acting was just awkward. It seemed as if she was trying too hard.

Split isn’t a terrible movie. It’s decent but I don’t think it lived up to the hype. I was hearing about how great this movie was and I was overly excited to see it. It just wasn’t scary and it wasn’t much of a thriller. It had this build up at the beginning of the film and then the middle just wasn’t that interesting. I wanted the movie to end so that I could see who the beast was. And when the beast finally showed up, I thought he was going to be this huge individual. He wasn’t. He was apparently suppose to be stronger but in this one scene he couldn’t bend the iron bars with ease. I was confused about the beast and who he really was. There are so many unanswered questions. Why were the girls kidnapped? Were they sacrifices to the beast? What made the beast appear? Was he laying dormant this whole time? No one really knows.

Also, at the end of the movie you see Bruce Willis sitting in a diner while a newscaster reports about McAvoy’s character. So I’m guessing this means that there will be a second Unbreakable movie. I’m looking forward to that because I want to see who will win between David Dunn and the beast.
