Review: Life

Here’s yet another Sci-fi movie to review. We just love this genre because it’s so much fun to watch. Life stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson and Ryan Reynolds. It’s a weird combo. I’ve never seen Gyllenhaal and Reynolds in the same movie and I never thought they would star in Sci-fi movie together. They are part of the International Space Station and their mission is to collect samples from Mars. They want to see if life exists. (They actually have proof, in real life, that there are microorganisms on Mars. This movie hits home for us because there’s even a space program dedicated to getting people on Mars. People are obsessed with Mars because, according to research, they used to have water and an atmosphere. I guess living on Mars is the dream for some people.)

Finding life on Mars in this movie takes it to another level. Life is a Sci-fi thriller/horror movie. What they find on Mars is some sort of super smart microorganism. Earth names it Calvin. Everyone is so excited because it is such a breakthrough in space exploration. After years of trying to find life in space, they’ve finally found it on Mars.  To the crew’s surprise, Calvin ends up hunting them. This is scary to think about and see because it could possibly happen in real life…maybe…maybe not. I’m not really sure. We have no idea what is out there and what it is really like. Life on Mars is totally different and Calvin has adapted in different ways. Calvin is this adaptive being that just excels at surviving. I feel like he should be in some sort of Marvel or DC movie as a villain. I don’t even know who would win against it because it’s so clearly superior. It learns through observation and it learns quickly. Calvin is a terrifying organism.

This movie was very intense and we were left guessing the entire time. We all know how movies can be predictable. This one wasn’t at all. That’s what makes it a great movie. The acting was superb. I could not have chosen better people to play the crew. Character development was a bit lacking for a couple people though. I would have liked to see some sort of background story or something from everyone.

The ending hinted at a sequel and I look forward to seeing what they come up with next. So if you haven’t seen this and you’re a fan of Sci-fi, go see it! 🙂
