This movie looked really creepy when I first saw the trailer. Crazy looking Japanese children will always scare me. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a movie that still scares me several days after I’ve seen it. I feel like if I close my eyes I’ll see that creepy Japanese school girl reaching out for me.
So the movie starts with a nanny looking for her twin who is missing in Japan. Her sister had wandered into the Aokigahara Forest where it is rumored as the Suicide Forest. Aokigahara is apparently in the top three most popular suicide places in the world (behind Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge and the Golden Gate Bridge). Legend has it that elderly and those who are ill are left to die in the forest. Also it is rumored that the forest is haunted by the yurei or angry spirits. The yurei are the spirits of those people who have been left to die in the forest.
Back to the story….her twin had been seen wandering into the forest but she doesn’t think that she is dead yet. Apparently the twins have sort of a sixth sense so they both know if either one is still alive. She goes into the forest with a guide and a reporter. The guide tells her that it is dangerous to go into the forest and that she should not go because she is sad. The forest takes advantage of your sadness and this causes you to commit suicide. In a few scenes you see how the forest does this. It causes you to hallucinate. One of the scenes shows tiny worms crawling into her wrist area. She almost starts to try to cut them out of her wrist (which would have lead to her bleeding out) but then gets distracted. Right when she crossed over the danger sign the forest started messing with her mind. Her sadness had betrayed her and she ended up paying for it with her life.
Honestly though, I thought that this movie was based on an earlier Japanese movie of the same name. I googled it and came up with nothing. It just seemed like it had the feel of a Japanese horror film. The fact that it was filmed in Japan added to the effect of the movie. It was set in, what I think is one of the scariest places on earth. When I visit Japan, the forest will definitely not be on my list to see.
If you’re into scary films you should definitely go see this. I know it didn’t get a high rating on imdb but I enjoyed watching it and it was worth seeing at the theater. Let we know what you think in the comments below 🙂
